AfriForum Supports KZN Police Commissioner’s Stand on Self-Defense and Firearm Responsibility

Advocacy group AfriForum has endorsed KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi’s recent statements regarding the right of individuals to defend themselves when faced with criminal threats. In an interview with TimesLive, Mkhwanazi emphasized that individuals issued firearm licenses should use their weapons to protect themselves. He highlighted the risk of firearms being used by criminals to commit further violence if surrendered.

Mkhwanazi also noted the alarming statistic of over two million illegal firearms circulating in South Africa, many of which have been taken from licensed owners. AfriForum’s Jacques Broodryk echoed Mkhwanazi’s concerns, stressing that it is crucial for firearm owners to prevent their weapons from falling into the wrong hands.

Broodryk, AfriForum’s spokesperson for community safety, underscored the responsibility that comes with firearm ownership. “It is not enough to simply possess such a weapon; one must be proficient in its use, especially under pressure,” he said. He called for regular, realistic training to ensure that firearm owners can effectively protect themselves while adhering to legal standards.

“Communities face ever-increasing threats, and the ability to defend oneself is crucial,” Broodryk added. “We support Mkhwanazi’s message and encourage all firearm owners to seek ongoing training. By doing so, they not only safeguard their own lives but contribute to the broader safety of their communities.”

In related news, between August 26 and September 1, police have arrested 117 suspects for murder and 160 for illegal firearm possession, underscoring the ongoing issues with firearm-related violence in the country.
