KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) police have expressed serious concerns over the increasing rate of extortion in the province, as criminal groups demand ransoms and so-called “collection fees” from local businesses. The warning comes after police shot and killed alleged extortionists in Durban on Monday, who were also linked to several murder cases.
The group had been terrorizing communities, forcing businesses to pay protection fees in exchange for safety. Authorities said the six suspects killed in the Durban CBD were involved in extorting local shops, further highlighting the pervasive nature of these criminal operations.
KwaNdengezi: A Hotspot of Crime
KwaNdengezi, an area notorious for hijackings, murders, rapes, and gang violence, has seen a surge in extortion-related crimes. Recently, the demand for protection money has overshadowed other forms of criminal activity in the area. Police have been investigating the extortion schemes that are increasingly targeting businesses, especially those owned by foreign nationals.
“What we discovered is commonly happening, especially in the west of the province. This collection of money or protection fee is extortion mainly from tuck shops in townships, mostly owned by foreign nationals,” said KZN Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
Police Vow to Intensify Investigations
Commissioner Mkhwanazi emphasized that law enforcement will continue to probe the incidents and take action against those involved. The recent crackdown in Durban serves as a warning to criminal syndicates that law enforcement is committed to combating the rising tide of extortion in the province.
The KZN police are determined to dismantle these extortion networks, which not only exploit businesses but also perpetuate fear and violence within local communities. With ongoing investigations and increased police visibility, authorities hope to curb the alarming trend and restore safety to the affected areas.
As police efforts continue, businesses and community members are encouraged to report any extortion attempts, with the hope that swift action will be taken to hold the perpetrators accountable and bring an end to the reign of terror imposed by these criminal groups.
