A woman who owns a tavern in Ga-Mothiba village, Limpopo, along with three men, has been arrested in connection with the murder of a man, Limpopo police confirmed.
The incident occurred on Sunday at a tavern in the village, where a case of mob justice was reported. Police responded to a call about an assault, finding two men who had been attacked. One of the victims, a man in his 20s, was found with multiple injuries inside the tavern. He was declared dead on the scene by emergency medical services, said police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba.
The second victim sustained injuries and was rushed to the hospital for treatment.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the two victims had entered the tavern after it had closed. They were then dragged inside and assaulted with various objects by the suspects. The motive for the attack remains unknown,” Ledwaba added.
Authorities have opened cases of murder and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Limpopo Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, praised the rapid arrests of the suspects and urged the community to refrain from taking the law into their own hands.
The four suspects, aged between 35 and 45, are set to appear in the Mankweng Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
Recent crime statistics show that from April to June 2024, 198 people were murdered in the province. Many of these killings stemmed from arguments and misunderstandings, with vigilantism also playing a significant role.
